Simple non-linear information presentation is what hypertext is. Readers of hypertext can choose their own path, establish their own order, and derive their own meaning from the content rather than reading or learning about things in the sequence that an author, editor, or publisher sets out for us.

By establishing "links" between the information, this is achieved. The purpose of these links is to allow readers to "jump" to more in-depth information about a particular subject being covered (which may have more links, sending each reader off in a different direction). For instance, you might find it interesting to view a picture of a dolphin if you are reading an article about the bioacoustics of marine mammals.

Or perhaps you'd rather to listen to the sound it makes (80K). Or perhaps you'd want to see what a spectrogram of a marine mammal sound "looks like." You might even wish to learn more about the sounds created by other marine animals, which would take you down an entirely different, in-depth route.

These illustrations show that this medium is not just confined to text. It may include visuals, audio, and even video. Hypermedia is thus presented as a multimedia approach to information gathering.
