The hypertext media could initially appear to be unsatisfactory for writers, whose goal it is to provide readers with structure and purpose. In a sense, the readers are co-authors of the text because they are free to arrange the information whichever suits them. In some sophisticated hypertext systems, readers can actually "contribute" to the content by adding comments or links to their own works. What function does the writer then serve?

Believe it or not, when writers enter the world of hypertext, they do not have to give up all control over a document.

The writer's role is to make the destination incredibly clear so that anyone could find there, as opposed to handing the controls to a novice information pilot. The author should simultaneously consider any potential needs the user may have.

It's the same as writing a persuasive argument, where the author must anticipate all potential objections and prepare appropriate counterarguments in advance.

You must always be prepared with all arguments and counterarguments, but in hypertext format instead of holding your reader by the hand and leading them step by step to your unquestionable conclusion.
